Former Family Matters star Darius McCrary is once again in the spotlight. This time, it’s not for a sitcom comeback. The actor is known for his role as Eddie Winslow. Court documents from Michigan show the drama began long before his recent arrest. In June 2024, McCrary missed a scheduled hearing. It was over unpaid child support. The court then issued a bench warrant for his arrest. Two months later, he filed a motion. He asked the judge to cancel the warrant. He claimed he never received the notice in time.
According to the 49-year-old actor, the paperwork went to a P.O. box instead of his Los Angeles home. He also said he had been looking after his mother after surgery and battling COVID at the same time. The filing read, “If he traveled from California to Michigan on June 24, 2024, he would have put others at risk.” He would have endangered other people.
McCrary argued the court didn’t have proper jurisdiction because his child’s birth certificate allegedly lacked a signature. He insisted he maintained a close, loving relationship with his teenage son. The teenage son is the child at the center of the case.
His legal team said prosecutors threatened to extradite him if he failed to appear in court. McCrary claimed he wasn’t trying to avoid anyone. “He’s a lifelong actor, not a flight risk,” his lawyer stated at the time.
“A Total Misunderstanding,” Says His Rep
On October 14, McCrary’s spokesperson, Ann Barlow, broke her silence and described the ordeal as a huge misunderstanding.
“Darius has always supported his son and been part of his life whenever given the opportunity,” she said.
Barlow believes the actor’s due process was violated because he received less than nine days’ notice to appear in court. She said the hearing letter arrived a day after the session had already taken place. As soon as he found out, McCrary allegedly contacted the court to resolve the issue.
She also claimed the court used the wrong address even though McCrary’s home information was on file. His lawyer, she added, never got proper notification either. “He’s been railroaded by the system,” Barlow said, calling the entire situation unfair.
The Long Road to Legal Trouble
This isn’t McCrary’s first child support issue. Court records show that prosecutors accused him of falling behind by over $95,000 as of March 2024. He was previously arrested in late 2023 but later released on bond.
In March of this year, officials alleged he continued missing payments while out on release. Prosecutors quickly moved to revoke his bond. When he missed another court date in June, a new warrant followed.
By early October, the situation had reached a breaking point.
Border Arrest Raises More Questions
On October 5, 2024, the actor was arrested near the U.S.–Mexico border by federal agents. Online records listed him as a “fugitive.” Authorities said he had crossed paths with the Border Patrol while attempting to leave the country.
His rep later claimed the trip had nothing to do with running from the law. “Darius was traveling to Mexico to help build homes for families in need,” Barlow said in a statement.
Still, the timing didn’t help his case. McCrary is now sitting behind bars without bond, awaiting his next court hearing scheduled for October 15.

Barlow insists McCrary has always stepped up as a father. She says his son lived with him for the first seven years of his life. The actor continued to provide for him afterward. “He’s always made sure his son is taken care of,” she said.
She also claims that the court has not given McCrary credit for payments made directly to his child. This is a detail that could significantly affect the amount he allegedly owes.
McCrary’s team now plans to bring in new legal counsel to “straighten everything out” and clear his name.
